As you can see, my baseball team needs some work. I might add, though, that I have long since given up and taken to adding Cards and ex-Cards and Mets to my team. Actually, they're doing better now than they were. Point is, I didn't know what I was doing this year, but I will next year, so lookout.

And yes, I am doing fantasy football. Rather, I own the team, David is doing most of the managing through suggestions. It's a free league on ESPN full of ppl I don't know, so I don't really care if I pay attention or not. The whole league autodrafted. I got lucky, it seems. Maybe I can convince myself that football isn't the worst sport ever played.

A trip back in the DEN

My DEN archive...

Looky here, you can take a trip back in time and read the hundreds of snippets that sucked my life away at the DEN. Some good, some bad, some stupid, some serious. Some even fun.

I urge you to take a look.

Best Web site ever

What's Chris Duncan dry-humping this week? is a part of http://www.riverfronttimes.com/, and I love it. I can't keep a straight face looking at it.

i.e. It's hot out, so Chris Duncan humps sun block.

i.e. Chris Duncan gets an infection, therefore he humps antibiotics.

The possibilities, really, are endless. See:
http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/stlog/unreal/whats_chris_duncan_dryhumping/

I hope he does now

My first attempt in a long time to write a column in a long, long time...

I sat in the back of Ss. Peter and Paul Church Monday watching as the casket holding a person who had recently become a good friend of mine rolled by, and I said goodbye for the last time.

Andrew Michael Walters, of Godfrey, died of heart problems on a Wednesday at age 26, but the memory of his young life won’t ever die for the hundreds of people that filed in and out of the church on the day of his visitation, or for the people who stood in the back of the church during his funeral because there was nowhere left to sit.

Tears rolling down my face, I wondered—what if he were standing next to me watching the whole thing?

Could he have guessed that his obituary would be among the top stories read on his hometown newspaper’s Web site, or that the same paper would feature an article on his life, an honor not just bestowed upon anyone?

I’m sure he knew he was popular to some extent, but could he have ever imagined the sheer amount of people who would mourn his loss after he was gone?

The line of people wishing to pay their last respects at Sunday’s visitation snaked in and out of the pews and seemed almost infinite. His parents even made the comment that they really had no idea how many people loved their son.

But how could we not have loved him?

“He was always smiling,” people said at his funeral. “He was always laughing and making other people laugh, and if he was having a bad day, no one would ever know it.”

“He would do anything for anybody, and he never said a negative thing about another person,” they went on.

He was the type of guy that everyone loved. It almost seems cliché to say right after someone dies, but with Andy, it’s true, and it was never more obvious than it has been the past week.

I wonder if he knew all that, and if he didn’t, I hope he does now.

A high school friend of his said it best at the funeral: “Even those who didn’t know him all that well—to those people, he was their buddy.”

His death impacted not only his closest friends and family, but also a number of others, including myself.

I can remember years ago when I only knew of Andy, and had never talked to him personally. I can remember the first time I hung out with him—when he and my best friend and I went to see One Lone Car open for Tobi Kai and the Strays at Mississippi Nights. I can remember coming home from a movie date with my then boyfriend, after which we met Andy for a drink at the Big Muddy Pub in downtown Alton.

With the beginning of sand volleyball season, I got to know him much better from seeing him every Thursday night and partying with him after the games. Then I got to see him even more as he became a frequent visitor at my boyfriend’s apartment. For three months I got to be closer with him, the three months just before he died. Although it seems unfair that it was such a short time, I am thankful that it happened.

He may have never guessed, because I didn’t until he was gone, that those three months were enough to leave a permanent mark on my life and inspire me to be a better person like he was.

I wonder if he knew all that, and if he didn’t, I hope he does now.

It’s been a week since he’s been gone, but the pain continues as we all attempt to go on with our normal, everyday lives.

I can only speak from my own experience, but there are days when I wake up with a song I heard at the funeral stuck in my head.

There are days when I need some company so that I don’t sit around and think about how we’ll never see that Dave Matthews concert we had talked about.

There are days when I’m OK one second and in tears the next, knowing that the last time I wore this dress was the last time I got to see him alive, knowing that I’ve heard his laugh for the last time or because I realize he won’t be there for tonight’s weekly volleyball game.

The world is missing a little something without Andy, there’s no doubt, but he will live on in many people’s hearts and memories.

I wonder if he knew all that, and if he didn’t, I hope he does now.

I wonder if, while dealing with health problems three years ago, the thought of what his funeral would be like ever crossed his mind, and whether it turned out the way he would have imagined.

I’ve thought of how mine might go, but I’ve never imagined anything like his turned out to be in reality. Then again, I’m no Andy Walters.

I wonder if he knew what it would be like, and if he didn’t—I hope he realizes now how special he really was.

Here's to you Andy

Oops I Wapped My Pants dedicated this Thursday's volleyball game to Andy Walters, a former member of the team.

We won 2 out of 3 games, taking the match for our good friend--against a really good team I might add. I even sent my serves to the moon a few times in honor of his serving skills. That's hard to do, so I think Andy must have been there looking out for us. NO one could serve like he could.

He never missed a game before, why should he start now I guess? We miss you Andy...

Also, we will no longer be splitting up the team, we will remain sponsored by Norb's, and if we ever get new shirts, this must stay:

Look at you, being remembered all Josh Hancock-style.

A Makeshift Memorial...

RIP Andy Walters

( Expect updates and edits throughout the week...)

Andy Walters, 26, died yesterday in his sleep.
I take solace in that at least it must have been somewhat peaceful.

I don't know a lot, but what I do know for sure is that the world is now short one of the happiest, nicest, coolest people there ever was--and I didn't even know him that well.

What I also know from hanging out with him quite a bit these past 6 months or so, is this:

Andy worked at Gebben Video in Alton, where he seemed to really love his job.
Everytime I mentioned a wedding or an event I'd planned on attending, he would chime in "do they need a videographer?"

H also still hosted a local music show on WLCA 89.9, which I never got to listen because it was on Monday nights when I'd always work late. It was a crossover from when he and Justin attended LCCC years ago and worked at the station together. I guess he never lost his love for it.

Andy loved music more than a lot of things, and got to enjoy it to the fullest in the hot Tennessee sun this summer at Bonnaroo with David and Justin. He was excited about going back next year too.
I was trying to get him to give me a list of artists to check out, which he tried to do, but the chicken scratch I jotted down when I was drunk was never legible the next day.
We were supposed to make plans to catch the Dave Matthews Band the next time they came through St. Louis though.

Andy was known for being "that guy with the serve" on our volleyball team, "Oops, I Wapped My Pants," which is sponsored by Norb's. His underhand serve would send the volleyball 50 feet in the air before it would come down on the opponent's side--and it was nearly impossible to hit. "Send it to the moon!" we'd shout at him when it was his turn to serve. The opponent always had a look of worry in their eyes, and rightfully so. We scored many-a-point with him at the helm. I say we dedicate this season to his memory and win it all, the way he would have liked it.

Our volleyball game was dedicated to him Thursday, the day after he died. See http://onetoomanyblogs.blogspot.com/2007/08/heres-to-you-andy.html

He seemed to be pretty active most of the time--I specifically remember him chugging a bottle of water before a game one day. "Maybe I shouldn't have taken that 400-mile bike ride this afternoon," he said. (Ok, so I exxaggerated on the 400 mile thing, but you get the point.) He never would have missed one game for the world.

He wasn't one for missing the celebration at Norb's Tavern afterward either. He always had a smile on his face and was always ready to have fun.

For his most recent birthday, he wanted to go to Buffalo Wild Wings but was disappointed when Justin, Ben and David had already fired up the grill at their apartment. I'm glad now that we got to make it up to him when we took him there several days later, and he seemed to have a good time.

I think Andy must have been happy before he died. I've not known him long but in the time that I have, I haven't known him to not be. And I hope he's in a better place, which I think he is, but he sure did leave behind family and an infinite list of friends who care dearly about him.

The visitation will be this Sunday at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Alton from 4-8 p.m. and the funeral will be Monday afternoon at 1 p.m.

The information I have is what I'm hearing from the people who knew him well, from various messages and phone calls and from my memory of him. I hear it may have been related to his heart troubles, for which he had many-a-benefit years ago. (Again, I have few details about that, but I always remembered hearing about them because his brother Marc was in my grade in school.)
Everyone I know whose known him has been on the phone all day trying to get more information, and although some has been posted on MySpace, I've been blocked out of the site all day "due to technical errors."

If you have any memories of Andy, please post them in the comments section.

Oops I Wapped My Pants

Volleyball begins again Thursday.
YAY! Who's ready to take this second place team to first?

Our first game is at 6 p.m.
Wear Norb's shirts, as always.

ON LEAGUE FEES:
I need to get the photo of the team from Megan ASAP because the whole point is to give it to Roxy and use it as leverage to get the bar to pay our league fees this session. I'm not going to have time to stop in and actually ask Roxy until nexy Monday whether she will pay our fees or not because of my work schedule and trip to Cincinatti this weekend. I didn't get a chance to today because I was feeling sick. I called Metro Sports, and they informed me that everything just has to be paid by Aug. 16, which is not this Thursday but next...
If someone wants to volunteer to go up there this week, give her the photo and talk to her, be my guest-- just be sure to let me know. Otherwise, I need the photo and will do it on Monday before I go into work. Just to let you know though, if I go in there and don't catch her on Monday, we still need to pay the full $195 fee on Thursday or they will tack on a $20 late fee. This is for your information whether we end up paying our own fee, or if Roxy has to reimburse us.

REIMBURSEMENT FROM LAST SESSION:
Speaking of, I owe each of you $3.75 (except John). I believe everyone gave me $20 and it turned out to be $16.25 each with all the people we had. (BTW, if you didn't pay for some reason, please tell me, although I think you all did.)
Someone has suggested that I use the money I owe you (totaling $41) to buy sets of darts to take to Norb's. Another suggestion has been to use the money to buy beer after a game one night, or to take the money someplace like Hooter's or BDub's for a party of sorts. Or I can just get a bunch of one dollar bills like a hooker and get you all your individual refund. Please let me know. You WILL get something back.

ON SPLITTING THE TEAM:
Without the two week break we usually get between sessions, exceptions being the last two, it is too late to split the team this session. The schedules are already made.
Everyone but Sandy is coming back to my knowledge, so we still have a lot of people (11). Splitting the team into two remains a possibility for coming sessions.
If we do this, we need to make sure all 11 of us are going to keep playing and have people who are interested in playing ready to go in case there's no break after this one.
When looking for players- keep in mind we do NOT need more boys. We have 6 already who come almost every week, and Scott, (Andrew's roommate), Ben (David's roommate) and Jon (who used to be on our team) have shown some interest in playing. That would put 4-5 boys on each team, which is borderline too many if everyone comes all the time.
We DO need more girls, because 4 is a perfect number to have on each (that way, you don't sit out very long and you still have enough people to play if everyone comes).
Andrew says the Regal Beagle would sponsor a second team.

HOW THIS WOULD WORK, IF IT DOES, and MY OPINION:

IF WE DO SPLIT, we can all still hang out at games and come early and drink and watch each other, but the teams will likely be completely separate.
I know you all paid for last session, but that was for the volleyball. The shirts were a gift for a team sponsored by Norb's- so, if we break into two, those who no longer play for the Norb's team should offer their shirts to any new players on the Norb's team. Andrew said the Beagle would buy those people on the Beagle's team new shirts.

MY OPINION:
It's been discussed before, but I don't think everyone playing for both teams is going to work.
Everyone WOULD get a Beagle shirt in addition to their Norb's one (which would be cool), however, things could get incredibly screwy, especially when it comes to tournament time. Also, it could be a bit of a conflict of interest, the same people playing for two teams. It's not MLB or anything but would it work if Albert Pujols split his time between the Cubs and the Cardinals? No. So think about it rationally for a minute.
THERE IS ALSO THE POSSIBILITY (for those of you who did not play indoor before) that many of you will not like indoor volleyball, which will likely be the next session. Some of you may stop coming or not want to continue playing. That's where Megan and I lost the entire first team we WERE on before (Los Perros Locos), what happened to at least two other teams after that and how we came to form Oops, I Wapped My Pants in the first place. I'm not saying you won't like it, but you might not. Sand volleyball is more popular than indoor for a reason. Please take that into consideration when thinking about splitting up teams.

And let me know what you think.

(This has been posted on Facebook and MySpace and is also on my page under the blog section if you want to refer to it later.)

I love utility guys

Speezer and Miles to be specific.

I didn't get to see either of their PITCHING debuts, but I would definitely pay money to go back in time to do so, if it were possible.

On June 16, Scott Spiezio worked a scoreless eighth inning in a 14-3 loss at Oakland.
Aaron Miles pitched a scoreless 8th inning in an Aug. 4 loss to the Nationals.

Gotta love these guys :) They do EVERYTHING. Sexy.
